Peace Garden

DM peace garden

Many thanks to my friend Jedn for sharing the article about the Des Moines Peace Garden published in the Des Moines Register on Tuesday, January 21 (http://www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20140122/OPINION02/301220027/1036/opinion01/Further-Reflections-Peace-Garden-will-place-reflection-downtown?nclick_check=1).  I was touched by the words that Des Moines Bishop Maurice Dingman and former Des Moines Rabbi Jay Goldberg inscribed on a brass medallion 35 years ago:

In the quiet of this place,
may we meditate
about the demands of love
In the face of:
Cries for help
silent suffering
wounding of the human spirit
taking of life
In our homes
our communities
our America
our world
May all who experience this garden
be more loving, merciful and sharing
that peace will dawn for every child,
of the source of all life,
may it be so. Amen.

The article was a special treat because it related to what I want to be creating this year: PEACE, and because it included a wealth of quotes (the quote gatherer in me likes that!):

  • “Peace is always beautiful.” ~Walt Whitman
  • “If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.” ~Mother Teresa
  • “Peace cannot be kept by force. It can only be achieved by understanding.” ~Albert Einstein
  • “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” ~Mahatma Gandhi
  • “If I could have three wishes, world peace would be all three.” ~Marlia, eighth grade
  • “Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect.” ~Chief Seattle
  • “True peace is not merely the absence of tension. It is the presence of justice.” ~Martin Luther King Jr.
  • “I do not want the peace that passeth understanding. I want the understanding which bringeth peace.” ~Helen Keller
  • “No one has the right to sit down and feel helpless. There’s too much to do.” ~Dorothy Day
  • “All we are saying is give peace a chance.” ~John Lennon
